Welcome 2023 With Gratitude from 2022

 THE BENEFIT OF GRATITUDE

Being Grateful for 2022 Helps Usher in 2023

As 2022 comes to a close, it it helpful to reflect on how we were successful in getting through the year. It is important to note that using a positive lens through which to evaluate what has transpired and where we have landed does not require us to ignore the painful or challenging experiences.  It is healthy to acknowledge problems and negative situations.  However, it is unhealthy to give those events and situations all of the power.  That is what happens when we narrow our lens and focus only or primarily on the pain of hurtful events.

A healthy attitude enables us to desire to be whole, feel well and move on. Psychological researchers have found that the practice of gratitude is helpful in switching our perspective from one of problem to solution and building the resilience to overcome the negative impact of hurtful events.  Specifically, the attitude of gratitude is the ability to see the "silver lining" in an otherwise negative situation or focusing on what you have and those things that you can appreciate, despite the unfortunate event.

Some benefits of an attitude of gratitude.

  • We realize in most cases, that we have more than we lost and can put problems in perspective
  • Appreciating what we still have and whatever is still working well fosters optimism
  • Feeling optimistic can significantly reduce feelings of hopelessness and anxiety
  • Gratitude enables us to see the possibility to rebuild, regain and become restored
  • We recognize and utilize our personal power within a situation that helps us overcome setbacks
  • Feeling grateful also enables us to recognize what we can offer and fosters generosity
  • We become more mindful and aware of our abundance, as opposed to our deficits
The practice of gratitude is fairly simple.  However, it requires intentional and regular practice to have the maximum benefit.  One popular method for practicing and strengthening one's attitude of gratitude is The Gratitude Journal.

Directions for doing a Gratitude Journal include:
  • Taking time out daily to consciously reflect on 3 things for which you are grateful
  • Each day, identify 3 different things for which you are grateful
  • There are no requirements for the magnitude of the items or things for which you may appreciate
