Overcoming A Covid-19 Career Crisis

As disappointing as this may feel, it is important to stay encouraged, focused and determined to achieve your employment and career goals.  


Below are some strategies that may help you get back on track with pursuing career related happiness and succes:


ACKNOWLEDGE:

The negative impact of Covid-19 on your employment and your feelings about it.  Remember that this was not your fault. What happened was beyond your control.

The current reality of the job market and your industry of interest, due to the impact of Covid-19. What are the projections about the recovery of your industry?  Or, is it likely that you will need to take a new direction or change your expectations?

Who you are (your sense of purpose; the meaning you assign to work; what you are passionate about, etc.)

What you want to do that will contribute to your happiness

Your strengths, talents, skill sets, accomplishments and experience


ASSESS:

How realistic your expectations are, given the possible changes in the job market due to Covid-19.  Perhaps it is time to re-assess the opportunities available and re-adjust your expectations and career aspirations.

Your Options: 

Additional or further education (i.e. graduate school; certification; re-tooling, etc.)

An interim or stepping stone job that may lead and prepare you for your "right fit" job

A survival level job that will enable you to support yourself, while allowing you the energy and the time to pursue your "right fit" job path

Resources (money, time, assistance from others, scholarships, online information sites, free government employment related services, etc.)

Get prepared for job hunting with creating a quality resume and learning or improving interviewing skills.  Check out online job search sites and resources with this information.

Get information about the job or industry, in which you are interested.  Do your research.

Get experience (volunteer experiences, internships, work-study programs, past employment experience, etc.)

Get a Mentor (someone well established in your field, who is willing and able to assist and guide you on your path)

Get known and Get to know others: Network (former co-workers, former employers, former professors, involvement in professional organizations related to your field, friends and family, who know what your career aspirations, etc.)

Get innovative: Create your opportunities (volunteer to demonstrate your skills; write articles or blog about your area of expertise and interest; do public speaking on topics related to your field; showcase and share your knowledge through videos online, etc.)
